Layout of the classroom

The class needs space for action so the desks can be placed on the sides for extra space to move.

Phase 1

Teacher begins the lesson by telling to the  student  that in Greek ,there are verbs that have an -ίζω (ezo) as an ending.  We write this ending  ezo always with -ι   (giota ) and only few verbs (7) does not follow the upper  rule. All the upper  verbs show action. ( for example, σκουπίζω,(skoupizw wipe ), καθαρίζω,(katharizw-clean), αγγίζω,(agizw-touch) μυρίζω,(mirizw-smell ) etc. Teacher tells to the student that today  they will learn only 3 verbs of the seven, that never follow the rule. These verbs are δακρύζω ( dakrizw -well up), δανείζω ( danizw-lend ),and αθροίζω (athrizw-add ).As we see we write these words  with different i

Phase 2

In  this  phase, under the teacher’s instructions ,each student should think a verb that ending in -ίζω (for example, ποτίζω-water) and mimic with his body what the verb  signifies. The other students should guess the verb. The music starts and each student does something (mops up ,wipes ,smells ,barks, paints ,carves, whispers etc). All these verbs in Greek ,ending in-ίζω.We really have a lot of fun.

Phase 3

In   the   third   phase we all hear a knock on the class door. Three strangers make an entrance into the class. The first  of them cries and wells up, the  second makes adds very loudly(1+4+7+3) and the third one holds money in his hand and tries to lend the other two and says ‘’Take -take money’’ Then they present  themselves  to the students.

–              I am the verb well up. I never follow the rules in grammar. My – ί,   is written with υ (δακρύζω) and for this reason   I   feel   sad  and   whenever  I remember this,  I  always  wipe.

–              I am the verb add. I adore to make adds loudly. I am an expert in adds and I am different from the other verbs. My   -ί ,   is written with the combination  of Greek letter  -οι (αθροίζω) .

–              I am the verb lend. I am keen on lending things. Pencils, clothes, books, cd’s but I like lending money the most. Μy  -ί,  is written   with   the   combination   of Greek letter  -ει ( δανείζω ).

Then, each one takes the corresponding paperboard with the verb and place it on his chest with paper clips.

They repeat again the upper presentations and show with their   fingers   the   different -ί . At the end   they   take   out the   paperboards .

Phase 4

The  teacher  has  written different  sentences in papers  that do  not include the upper verbs and student should complete the missing word with  the correct ending.

All the student now can remember the grammar rule that concerns the ending-  ίζω   of   Greek   verbs   and   especially    the  3  verb’s exceptions,  as through that play,  they have been  engraved on students mind forever.
