The Dictionary of Action (movement)

(Greek Educational System)

Let’s make a creative lesson based on the dictionary. For the Greek schedule of classes of the Elementary School it can be adapted for all three first grades and it is very valuable for the Language lesson.  The Dictionary has nouns, adjectives and verbs (and more). The Educator can teach it to all three Grades changing the level of difficulty. Commencing always with the easiest for the 1st Grade and more difficult for the next ones.

To the according creative lesson for the 1st Grade, we proposed the verbs that are the easiest (in understanding) as they involve an action in their meaning.

In 2nd Grade there are many things we can do with the combination of words and the parts of the speech.

Teachers preparation

Knowing the level of his/her class, the teacher chooses or creates the actions that are understandable to the children. We just propose an action-plan. The Teacher can alter it according to the needs of the class.

Materials for the lesson

Almost nothing
(or whatever the teacher needs in designing his/her lesson)

1st Suggestion

Saying a verb, that the children have been taught.   The students have to find the noun or the other way around.

The verb sing … noun the song. The verb to run or running… noun the run.
The verb write … noun the writing. E.t.c.
The announcement can be presented as a game between 2 groups. Team A can say a verb (from a list proposed by the teacher or the lesson)  and Team B should find the noun.

 2nd Suggestion

In combination with the “Athologio” (a book of stories and Myths in the Greek Educational System).

We divide the children into 2 groups.
Team A students’, have to find all the nouns from a story from the book and write them in their writing-book. (i.e. “The Owl and the Partridge», a folk tale from Cyprus- Section 1)
Team B will find all the verbs and also write them in their writing-book.

The Teacher asks the students from Team A, to present the nouns that they found. The same with Team B, with the verbs.

Each student chooses a word of his/her own.
(Maria: learn, George: saw etc and from the other team, Anna: partridge, Constantine: noon …)

Calling out names in random from both teams, the teacher asks the children from both teams to come to the board and present their verb and noun.

The aim is to have funny combinations:

“To learn to partridge”, “saw noon”. The teacher keeps one student from one of the teams (A) and asks the students from the opposite team (B) to find a correct word for the first one. In this way the students can find the correct combination of verbs and nouns and develop their language skills. The same can take place with the combination of nouns and adjectives.
