Layout of the classroom

The classroom is organized as a “bridge over a river between two banks”.

The desks are arranged in the two long rows in front opposite wall of the room as the two banks.

The wide paper band is placed in the middle of the room to serves as a bridge over the river.

Phase 1

The students are standing on both “banks” in front of the desks.

The teacher asks each student to pull out   a small sheet from the hat / there must be for example – two sheets of the same colour. So that 20 children can formed 10 pairs – 2 yellow, 2 blue, 2 red, 2 green and 2 orange /. Each child finds his/her mate in color. They formed a team of two.

The teacher asks all couples to stand on one side of the “bridge”. Depending on the color of the teams, each pair   receives two A4 sheets with the written words and pair of scissors.

The teacher explains the rules of the game. First, each team must choose which of the two words can be divided   at the end of the line. Then the teacher shows how each pair should divided the word by cutting it with the scissors   where they think it is right.

Then each pair carries their word across the river, with each child of the team standing at either end of the “bridge” and holding a part of the divided word.

If a team makes a mistake it means “they have fallen into the river” and the other teams will have to save them by helping them correct the mistake.

 Phase 2

The teacher shows the sand clock and tells the teams that they have 2 minutes to choose and cut the word correctly. When the sand runs out theirs time is over.

The game starts as the teacher turns the sand clock and says “start”.

Each pair decides which of the two words can be divided and cuts it with the scissors where they think it is the right place to divides it.

The teacher keeps track of the time and says „stop “when it runs out.

Phase 3

The teacher tells the first pair to carry their word “over the bridge”, while the other teams are sitting on the desks expecting for their turn.

The teacher-designated pair stands at either end of the “bridge”, each child   holding a part of the word.

The teacher asks the other teams whether their classmates have correctly divided the word.

Then the teacher asks the couple why the word they have left cannot be   divided?

The team answers justified by the rules dividing word at the end of the line. (In Bulgarian one – syllable word are never divided).

If the couple makes a mistake, the other teams can help them. They “pull them out” of the river by offering suggestions for the correct division of the word.

Phase 4

The game continues until all teams have correctly divided their words over the “bridge“.

Finally, all teams receive rewards – emoticons of the same word they have correctly divided by the game.

Teams that have helped other “get out of the river” receive a badge of Words Savior”.

The pupils help the teacher to put the classroom back to its normal order.
