The Role of Volcanoes and Earthquakes
in Changing Nature

5th Grade Geography (Greek educational system)

Materials for the lesson

Clay or doe, plastic bottle or glass jar, baking soda, dishwashing liquid, vinegar, hot water, coloring

Layout of classroom

Teacher has already asked the students to bring the above-mentioned materials. He has moved his/her class in the Science Laboratory where there is internet access.

Phase 1

Students first watch one of the two experiments on ‘volcanic explosion’ simulation. They then try to create their own volcanoes.

Students “observe” the fact of change in nature caused by lava and volcanic ash. Teacher initiates discussion on volcanoes’ role in human activities.

Phase 2

Students are reminded of the procedures in case of emergency evacuation of the school. They are asked to form ‘groups of experts’, study the school building and identify possible problems in the procedure. They are asked to come up with suggestions relevant to security in and around the school buildings and possibly the surrounding buildings.

Phase   3

Teacher asks students to relate volcanic and earthquake activity as they relate to human presence and well-being. She/he assists them in identifying earthquake prone areas in Greece, the Mediterranean and the world. She/he asks them to spot active volcanoes around the world.
