Phase 1

Teacher explains to the students that the theme of the lesson will be animals and specifically the distinction between vertebrate and invertebrates. Children are involved in a discussion in which they are asked if they already have an idea of what is it that distinguishes these two types of animals and if the word “vertebrate”  reminds them something else. The idea is to lead them to the answer, through reasoning.

Phase 2

Students are divided into small groups regarding  the groups of vertebrate and invertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, polyphyletic, celendatus, annelids, mollusks, echinoderms, insects, arachnids, crustaceans). Each group will have to locate and draw on as many animals as possible for the subgroup assigned. When all the groups have completed their work, they present it to the rest of their classmates.

Phase 3

Teacher leads the children to the gym and invites them to settle in a row. Each child, alternatively, is assigned to the vertebrate or invertebrates group. Everyone will have to think of an animal, to represent with the movement, belonging to the category. When  the music starts, each child will have to move  according to the type of animal found. At a second signal, represented by the stop of music, the children, according to their animal, will have to divide into the two vertebrate and invertebrates groups. The game can be repeated several times.

Phase 4

Tteacher accompanies the children back to class and resumes their experience with them. By using the drawings of the second phase you can create a conceptual map to hang in the classroom.
