Materials for the lesson

Drawings of the heroes of 1821 Revolution.
A string or wire (several meters).
Clothing Pegs or paper-clips.
Pencils, colors and paints.
Scissors.
Children’s bags and back-packs.

Teachers Bell.

Layout of the classroom

The desks are set aside so as to have ample space in the middle to create an improvised scenery with the children’s bags and back-packs.

1st Phase

Artistic Activity.

Ωe draw little figures around 10-12 cm using simple papers and our colors. Each student should draw at least 2-3 little people that later on will be placed in, out and around the improvised scenery/model of the city of Tripolitsa. The Greeks have a blue hat/turban as a characteristic and the fustanella white skirt under.  The Turks wear a red fez/hat.

The Teacher can present on the blackboard 3-4 images of heroes of 1821 in a quite large size for the children to see and draw.
When they are ready, we cut the figures around to have the human shape. They can be folded in two so they can stand more easily when placed.

Synthesis of the “model”.
We set the desks aside after we have finished with all the artistic drawing and cutting.
Under the guidance of the Teacher, the bags and back-packs are placed as a –not very round-circle to represent the Castle of Tripolitsa that is about to fall.

The teacher narrates the lesson and guides the placement of the Greek and Turkish armies.
(The lesson mentions 4 camps with leaders : Kolokotronis, Giatrakos, Mavromichalis, Anagnostaras, the forces at Megara city…etc.).

2nd Phase

The string is stretched on the one wall of the classroom and every-time a date is mentioned, the students write it on a piece of paper and hang it with a peg. It would be good if this line of dates stays on the wall throughout the year and History lesson of the Greek Revolution. So, there will be created a date-line with all the facts and where a student can refer to, when having a question about if a fact or date is right or wrong.

3rd Phase

The teacher gives the students to read and recite the words and statements that are referred to in the Chapter “ The sources are narrating …” (Thomas Gordon, Theodore Kolokotronis)

4th Phase

The Chapter “Glimpses of the Past” , could expand further than what the book mentions. The teacher can assign projects to the students such as:

1. Education in Greece during  the times of 1821. ttps://el.wikipedia.org/

2. The traditional vocations/occupations back then ( saddle makers, farriers, barrel makers …etc.)
