Materials for the lesson

There are none needed.

Layout of the classroom

1st Phase: The classroom is empty to move freely.

2nd Phase: Students can sit on the floor or on the chairs while the discussion continues.

3rd Phase: The classroom is empty to move freely.

1st Phase

The teacher and the students stand in a circle. Each student pretends to play a sport (improvisation) then the rest of the group repeats.

Example:

– Playing football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, going to camp, fishing, skiing, playing hockey, running, walking, playing tennis etc…

2nd Phase

The teacher asks students to think about the 4 seasons (Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring).

What is the weather like in each season? (Sunshine, thunderstorms, heat in the Summer, fog, hurricanes, cool in the Fall, snow, sleet, icy winds in Winter, friendly rain, warm in Spring etc.).

The teacher writes the answers to these questions on the board.

3rd Phase

The teacher asks the students to imagine if it was summer what kind of sport they would do. The teacher can suggest some sports from the 1st Phase.

When the teacher says “Weather Change: Summer” all the students play the sports according to the Summer weather conditions. The teacher should change the weather several times to let students improvise they are playing different sports in different seasons.

Tips: The teacher can freeze all the students and ask:

–       What kind of sport are they playing?

–       What are now, the weather conditions and what season is it?

–       Are they playing alone or together?

–       Can they play the same sport in different seasons?

4th Phase

The desks and the chairs are organized to their usual position.

Discussion/Reflection on today’s workshop will focus on :

If the students visited other countries such as Greece, Turkey, Spain, Italy? How would the weather be there? What do students do in these countries?
