Materials for the class

–       A paper that are written the 21 regions of Sweden.

–       A map of Sweden.

–       Colourful pens

–       5 maps of Sweden with the 21 regions. These maps will be cut into small pieces for the puzzle activity.

Layout of the classroom

1st Phase. The classroom is empty to move freely.

2nd Phase. The students can use the whole classroom, the chairs and desks for their group.

3rd Phase. They move around again.

1st Phase

Teacher and students all stand in a circle. The teacher gives to each student one name of a region. If the students are more than 21 the teacher gives the same name twice. Now each student has a region name.

The teacher draws the map of Sweden with the regions (without names) on the board.

The teacher explains the game. The teacher places a Swedish map in the middle of the circle and asks the students to look down on the map (heads, eyes down). When everybody looks down on the map the teacher counts one to three. Then all students uplift their heads and make eye contact. When two students make eye contact with each other, then they should shout THE MAP. Then they tell which region they are. Then they go out of the game and paint the region and write the name of the region on the white board.

The game continues with the rest of the group. When the last 2 students leave the game finishes.

The rules of the game:

–       The students cannot move their eyes or head after they make decision.

–       The students cannot look up or down after countdown finishes. They must look at another student within the circle.

2nd Phase

The students return to their desks and go through the 21 regions together with the teacher.

3rd Phase

The teacher divides the class into 5 groups and gives them a piece of the map (it is cut in small pieces). The students have time to bring together the small pieces. When they finish they will write the name of the regions on them. Those who complete the map shout THE MAP.

4th Phase

The teacher and the  students stand in the circle again. The map is in the centre. Everybody is staring on it. Each student has again the same region that they had at the beginning.

The teacher explains the game. Each person in the circle has the right to sit on floor whenever they want. But if two students sit at the same time, whole group should stand up again. The game continues until all students and the teacher sit on the floor.

Whenever a student sits on the floor the student should shout the name of the region and leave the region infront of him or her.

5th Phase

The teacher finishes the workshop with reflection.

–       In which region does their (students) family come from?

–       Is there any differences between regions (food, weather, music, language)

–       Are there also different regions in other countries in Europe?
