Phase 1

Teacher searched the meaning of “cryptology” before the lesson. (Cryptology, science concerned with data communication and storage in secure and usually secret form. It encompasses both cryptography and cryptanalysis) Teacher gives a worksheet about the introduction to percent problems and she solves these problems with the students.

Phase 2

Teacher divides the students into two groups of five or six. Groups are named like 1., 2., 3., etc.

Teacher: “We received a letter. We have no idea about the sender. There are lots of characters and calculations that we can’t understand. We think that is a special encryption. The only we can understand is the part that’s written 60% and “g”. Researchers solved that part is a maths problem. This problem is so important for us. We need your help as a cryptologist. We want you to solve the language of the letter and write the maths problem especially.”

Groups are wanted to write a maths problem included 60% and “g”. After writing the problem, each group gives the problem to another. Each group has time to prepare a drama about that problem’s theme. Each group acts their plays and then solve their percent problems on the board.

Phase 3

Teacher wants students to evaluate the lesson.
What is “cryptology” and which occupations can use it?
How can we use percent and decimal numbers in our daily life?
Give examples about the occupations that use percent and decimal numbers.
