Materials for the lesson

10 pencils
5 books
4 pens
6 rubbers
A chalk

Layout of the classroom

The   desks   must be at the back of the classroom  so as to have free space in the front of the class.

Phase 1

Teacher   shows    the   upper   materials   for   the   lesson   and   explains   that   only   the   10   pencils   form   the   first  10,  while  all  the  others objects (5 books, 4 pens, etc.) are just units.

Teacher says, that they are going to make additions with two numbers   that  surpass  the  number  10,  by  using the help of the first ten.

Phase 2

Now the teacher writes on the blackboard the addition of numbers 8+4.

Students are standing upright and are divided into two groups.( in eight and four)

Teacher explains that in order to make easier and faster the upper addition,  the  second group of number four, should give so many students to the first  group of eight, as to forms  the first ten.

Two students of the second group, move to the first group, leaving only two students behind them.

Now all the students ascertain, that the 1st group, have 10 students, while the 2nd have only 2

The add is very easy to be done now.  The    10   from the 1s t   group  and   the  2  from the 2nd group, gives the result  of  12

In a few words 8+4=12

Phase 3

In   this   phase,   the   upper  action  is  repeated many times with different additions and  each time the students, gain a deeper understanding of  adding 2 additives  by using the help of the first 10.

Phase 4

The   class   returns   to   its   first   form and the students sit at their desks and open their books on the corresponding chapter.  They   can easily resolve the proposed exercises of the book.
