Phase 1

Teacher introduces the subject to the class,  she explains  to children how the solar year is divided: how many months and how many seasons .  To  make it easier  and  to create a link with children’s daily life, it is recommended to use a calendar.

Phase 2

Students are divided into groups, each group is assigned a month of the year. With the help of the teacher, small groups will have to think about the characteristics (climate, festivity …) of the assigned month and draw or write them on a sheet. When all groups have completed the job, the teacher collects the sheets and shares the information across the class. Each group will write on a cardboard, the name of the given month, then they will stick a rubber band on the cardboard.

Phase 3

Game “Guess which month I am”. After discussing with the students about the main features of each month and locating the position on the calendar, the game  begins. One child at a time will be called to wear a card with a month’s name on the forehead. He will ask to his mates questions about the climate, the weather, the colours of the month he wears on his forehead, in order to guess its name.  The game ends when every child in the class  has worn a card.

Phase 4

The teacher resumes the subject with the children and invites them to create a billboard with the calendar of the months of the year and their characteristics. In the billboard you can add rhymes to remember  some features, like the famous italian refrain about the number of days in months: “Thirty days in November with April, June and September, twenty-eight there is one, all others have thirty one
