Materials for the lesson

A long cable with a lamp.

A bed-sheet of light color (white or beige)

The Teacher’s Bell

Layout of the classroom

The desks at the edge, empty space in the middle.

Two desks rise up to a distance of about two meters between each other, so as to stretch the sheet in between and form curtain for the shadows.

Skewer (kebab) sticks.

A light blackout in the classroom.

1st Phase

A short process of handicraft and painting.

We paint various shapes and drawings, inspired by the lesson.

(A lighthouse, a frythoria (sequence of communication fires in ancient times), round shapes that are photons, candles, candlesticks, a tree, a house, a man, etc.)

We pass the skewer-sticks from the shapes so that we can handle them from a distance on the sheet/curtain

2nd Phase

First Location of Light source: Some of the children are behind the sheet/curtain and the lamp is behind the children. So, we have the sheet/curtain (stretched between the two upright desks), the children with the figures and then the lamp.

When the lamp lights up, we see the shadow of the children’s silhouette on the sheet/curtain, because the light source is from behind.

If the lamp moves right to the left, the shadow of the children is also moving on the curtain.

Second Location of The Light Source: The teacher changes the position of the light source. He/She transports the lamp between the children and the curtain.

Now the figures made by the children look embossed with their shadows on the sheet and the children can make them alive.
Action: To the left of the curtain, a child holds the sun (a figure)

To the right, we see a house with a window that can be opened.

One or more photons leave the sun, beat the house and leave again to another direction.

Dialogue(as an example):

Photon Α: Let’s go and light-up the house there!
Photon Β: Ok. We lit it up and, at the same time, we warm this up.
(They do the route on the curtain and they touch the house)
Photon Α: Oh! We can’t get in!

Photon Β: Off course, they haven’t opened the window yet.
A Voice (from the house): God! It is dark and cold in here

Photon Α: Lady, open the window so we can get in and you will see! You will warm up!
(The window opens and the photons disappear in the house. A woman gets out of the house)

Woman: (Voice same as before) Finally! Light and warmth!
Photons (together) Off course! We ran towards you and we light you up! And we warm you up too!

Behind the curtain, there can be other shadow games as dictated by the lesson.                                                    Sub-chapter: Game with shadows and silhouettes.
