Materials for the lesson

  1. Various things for eating and drinking – but not real once -like empty small plastic bottle of water, small empty box of juice, plastic sausage, various plastic fruits, small bread etc

The number of pictures, letters and magnets should match the number of pupils in the class.

Layout of the classroom

The classroom is organized as a ‘’deserted island’’. The pupils desks are put aside. Some of the chairs are put on a chaotic pile in the middle of the empty class room.

Phase 1

The teacher explains the rule of the game. Every pupil will impersonate a survivor of a shipwreck. Pupils should imagine that two ships crash on a deserted island, and there are only two survivors – one from each of the ships. Every one of them managed to save only one thing either to eat or drink from his/her ship. They see each other for the first time and they hold a conversation.

The teachers explains how important are words when people communicate – either to ask for something, or just to know or help each other.

The pupils put aside the desks and some of the chairs. With the rest of chairs they make a pile which represents a deserted island.

Phase 2

From both sides of the island two survivors stand or lay down and see each other for the first time. Each of them has one thing to eat or drink saved from crashed ship.

They should lead a simple but polite conversation. They should introduce each other and ask whether they are fine. They should also offer each other to share the think they managed to save from the ship in order to survive. At the end they should suggest to build a common shelter or to build a float-board in order to sail away from the deserted island. They should become friends.

Phase 3

The game repeates with everyone. At the end everybody decided which couple had the most polite and nice conversation.

Phase 4

Pupils help the teacher to put the classroom back to the normal order.
