3rd Grade – History (Italian educational system)

th12

Materials for the class

Stones, string, cloth, sticks, shellies.

How to organize the room

The activity will be performed in the classroom. You should create 5 groups with the desks.

Phase 1

The teacher explains the human evolution (from Australopithecus to Homo Spaiens Sapiens). She/he pays attention to the ability to grab and produce objects.

Phase 2

Then the teacher divides the children into 5 groups, one for each stage of evolution: Australopithecus, Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, Homo Sapiens, Homo Sapiens Sapiens. Each group has to find out the main features of the stage (for example ability to walk for the Australopithecus, ability to produce stone objects for Homo Habilis and so on). Then the group produces the objects, using several materials.

Phase 3

Through a short sketch each group presents the typical activities of a particular stage of evolution and the other groups have to guess it.

Phase 4

The teacher asks each group to realise a drawing on an A3 sheet about the studed hominid. All the drawings will be presented to the class and hung together (with the objects of the phase 2 too).
