Materials for the class

Small cardboards, small bag, pencils, cardboards divided into cells.

Layout of the classroom

The activity will be performed in the classroom.

Phase 1

The teacher introduces the topic and explains the main rules of decimal fractions with 10, 100, 1000 as denominator. He/she gives some examples and asks the children to help him/her.

Phase 2

Each child receives a small cardboard and he/she has to write six decimal fractions on it that he/she has invented (two with 10 as denominator, two with 100 as denominator and two with 1000 as denominator). When the children are done, the teacher recollects all the cardboards and puts them in the bag.

The game can now start. The children are divided into two groups. The teacher takes a cardboard from the bag, he/she shows and reads it loudly. When he/she says “go!” the first child of each group has to run to write the result on the blackboard.

The children receive a point for any right answer.

The group with more points wins.

Phase 3

The decimal numbers written on the blackboard will be written down on a separate sheet of paper by the teacher, in order to realise a bingo. Every child receives a cardboard divided into cells and he/she has to write there some of the decimal numbers used before. The teacher picks a decimal fraction from the bag used before and the children have to indicate on their cardboards the correspondent decimal number, if they have it.

The child that ends the cells first wins.

Phase 4

The teacher recalls the activity with the children and asks them to write down decimal fractions and decimal numbers on their notebooks.
