Layout of the classroom

The desks – chairs must be move by the walls of the classroom. We need free space.

Phase 1

In the first phase the lesson takes place in the classroom in a traditional way. The teacher gives the first knowledge and information about how they can add and subtract numbers like  10, 20, 30 …to 100.

Then, teacher sticks the large paper on the wall which he has drawn a tram route with tram stations. The route begins from Syndagma to Glyfada. There are 5 stations.

The Teacher divides students in pairs of two, and elaborates the drama actions.

Firstly, one of the pairs must form a Tram, only by connecting their hands (create a vehicle) and wearing sticker papers which will have the word Tram on them. Each pair will stand beside station (the cones are stations). These students will be a passenger and they will wear stick papers with the numbers 10, 30, 40, etc. on them. Finally, the last two pairs are responsible for the calculations, they work as the secretariat. They must observe which number ( 30, 20 etc), gets on or gets out of vehicle (tram). They should make additions and subtractions

Teacher says the details about this freestyle performance and became a traveler of education adventure, is the person who encourages the children in whole process.

Phase 2

Teacher’s bell ring and the tram (empty) starts the route. The children make a little noise like a real tram. The tram arrives at the first station and two numbers get on the tram.

Teacher’s bell rings again and action freezes. A secretariat works on calculation (for example 20+40=60) and they must write how many passengers  are on tram .

Teacher’s bell rings again and the tram starts moving again towards the second station. This time two numbers get on and one number gets out of tram.

Teacher’s bell rings again and actions freezes. A secretarial works on a new calculation and they must write again how many passengers there are on tram

The same action continues until the terminal station.

At the terminal station a secretarial displays the final score.

Phase 3

In the 3rd phase the teacher introduces the new condition, he asks from the children to change roles. The passengers become secretarial and vehicle and the reverse.

Teacher’s bell rings again and the tram goes back to the start of route, in the same way .

Furthermore at each station the same events happens again. The teacher asks from passengers to take pleasure and fun from this procedure and  asks students to play this scene as flashback from real experience also to portray this role as the better as they can.

Phase 4

In the end, all stand in a circle and present possible questions, express their feelings during actions. Then children return to their desks and make more exercises.
