How many books do I need to become a Teacher
1st Grade Mathematics: Counting sizes
Chapter 8th– Sub Chapter 54/1 (Greek Educational System)
Materials for the lessonA classroom short chair or something else (stool, box, crate etc, for the children to step on)Some large books, of different page-length and with a hard-cover if possible.
Layout of the classroomThe desks at normal position. |
1st PhaseThe teacher says that today we will measure the height of each child and find out how many books he/she has to read to become wise like a teacher. |
2nd PhaseWe count first our teacher. The teacher stands with his /her back at the blackboard and the children measure him (standing on his/her desk let’s say). They put a sign with the chalk on the board. The teacher makes a line from one side of the board to the other at the level of the sign so it can seen clearly. |
3d PhaseA chair is placed in front, touching the board. The books with the hardcover are next to it in a pile. The children go up on the chair one by one, touching the board with their back. Clearly they do not reach the height of the teacher’s line.
4th PhaseThe children watch each student that goes up the chairα and judge if they have to add or deduct a book and what book (history, geography etc) so as to reach the teachers height. We are in an enthusiastic mood with lots of opinions and calculations. The results are written down by a Secretary that the teacher has assigned and he/she is supervising.
