Materials for the lesson

The children’s jackets or anything else from their staff the Teacher thinks as appropriate.

Children’s shoes.

Camera from the Teachers mobile phone.

The Teachers Bell.

Layout of the classroom

Τhe desks are put aside to have empty space in the middle.

The space should better be cleaned and mopped first.

1st Phase

The Teacher asks the children to place down in the middle their jackets.
He makes quick photos of their shoes just to be sure in the end, whose is whose!

The Teacher explains that the lesson is divided in three phases.

  1. The children stand in a circle with their jackets down in the middle.

  2. When the bell rings the children run take the jackets and wear them.

  3. When it rings for the second time, they take it off again and place it on the floor, then go back to the circle.

  4. When the bell rings for the third time, they turn towards the wall (their backs turned to the centre of the circle where their jackets are so as not to see them). They will even cover their eyes with their hands so as not to see what the teacher is doing.

2nd Phase

The lesson starts with consecutive rings. The children run, find their jackets and wear them; they take them off and return.
Teachers Question: How many are the children and how many the jackets? (The right answer of course is that they are equal in number)

The game starts again. The children turn to the wall and the teacher. Without them seeing him/her, removes one-two jackets randomly. The action repeats and two children have no jacket.

Teachers Question: How many are the children and how many the jackets? (the right question is that the jackets are less than the children)

3d Phase

The children that have no jacket go to the Teachers desk and wait. The game starts again. The Teacher without been seen puts back the jackets that he/she had previously removed.

The children again with the sound of the bell run to wear their jackets. But now there are two extra jackets as two children are waiting at the desk and not participating.

Teachers Question: How many are the children in relation with the jackets? (Right answer: the jackets are more than the children)

4th Phase

The lesson can continue in the same way with the children’s shoes. But now it is more complicated as there are 2 shoes that correspond to each student. The game is more complicated and more fun.            Through this class the children can learn the inside and the outside of the jacket, the inside-out if they turn out their sleeves and even to tie their shoe-laces (although many athletic shoes have straps).

Mistakes are always part of the schedule and are corrected. Difficulties are encouraged as they bring experience and knowledge.

5th Phase

The Teacher in the end returns to the “Usual Situation” and conducts his/her lesson in the known way, from the book while indicating the parallel situations with the previous game.

If the children know only to count up to 5 or 10, then the teacher creates groups of 5 or 10 children so as to have the needed response and answers he/she wants.
