Go to the lesson

counting sizes

Materials for the lesson

A classroom short chair or something else (stool, box, crate etc, for the children to step on)

Some large books, of different page-length and with a hard-cover if possible.
But the text books can be also used and be different in content (history, language, geography books etc)    A common meter for counting length.

Layout of the classroom

 The desks at normal position.

1st Phase

The teacher says that today we will measure the height of each child and find out how many books he/she has to read to become wise like a teacher.

2nd Phase

We count first our teacher. The teacher stands with his /her back at the blackboard and the children measure him (standing on his/her desk let’s say). They put a sign with the chalk on the board. The teacher makes a line from one side of the board to the other at the level of the sign so it can seen clearly.

3d Phase

A chair is placed in front, touching the board.                The books with the hardcover are next to it in a pile.   The children go up on the chair one by one, touching the board with their back.  Clearly they do not reach the height of the teacher’s line.
(If the chair is not suitable we can use a stool etc so the children are lower that the line and we will need to add books to reach it)
Books can be added on top or under a child (On the head of a child or under its feet) in order to reach the teachers line height.
The books vary in number so the children have to read different number of books each to become wise like their teacher.

4th Phase

The children watch each student that goes up the chairα and judge if they have to add or deduct a book and what book (history, geography etc) so as to reach the teachers height.  We are in an enthusiastic mood with lots of opinions and calculations. The results are written down by a Secretary that the teacher has assigned and he/she is supervising.
For Example: George=1 chair plus 4 books, Anna= 1 chair + 3 books

If the books as we said previously are of different content (History, Mythology, Geography) then the lesson can be even more fun and the work of the Secretary more complicated :

George= 1 chair+2 geography books+1 history book+1 mythology book                                                          Anna= 1 chair + 1 Geography book+2 history books. .

5th Phase

He teacher counts with a common meter and finds that his/her height is (i.e. 1,76)
The class can go on as usual and the teacher explains and presents the lesson.
