Materials for the lesson

  1. Various geometric figures from hard paper or plastic, in different sizes, but not smaller than 50 cm and not bigger than 1 m – squares, rectangles, circles, trapezium, equilateral triangles, isosceles triages, scalene triangles .

Total number of figures should equal number of pupils in the class. Every group of figures could be in a different colour, like circles could be green, rectangles could be yellow, trapezium could be blue etc.

  1. Signs with names: squares, rectangles, circles, trapezium, equilateral triangles, isosceles triages, scalene triangles

Layout of the classroom

The classroom should be empty. All desks and chairs are put aside.

Phase 1

The teacher explains the rule of the game. Everybody gets a geometric figure randomly. Pupils form groups depending on their figures – squares, rectangles, circles, trapezium, equilateral triangles, isosceles triages, scalene triangles. On the floor the class must make a picture altogether said by the teacher (house with a courtyard, city landscape, a bus, a rocket etc) , using one figures at a time from each of the groups – all groups one after each other, until all figures are used.

Teams stay up around a sign with the name of the group: Squares, Trapezium, Circles etc. Every time somebody puts a figures, he/she says loud the name of the figure too.

Phase 2

The pupils put aside desks and chairs

The teacher gives randomly figures.

The teachers places signs with names of the groups in a row of order of putting the figures. Centre of the room should be free for creating pictures.

The teacher says the task of the first round, e.g. Lets create a bus. One of the groups is first to put a figure on the floor to start the picture, e.g. Circles, e.g.Trapezium are second, e.g. isosceles triangles are third and so on until all figures are put in the picture. The order of groups is not important.

Phase 3

After every picture, the groups change their places and start creating another picture, e.g. City landscape. A different group of figures starts first, for instance Scalene triangles, then Rectangles etc.

Phase 4

At the end the teacher repeats the name of the figures and asks groups to return their figures one by one.

Pupils help the teacher to put the classroom back to the normal order.
