Layout of the classroom

The desks – chairs must be placed in the classroom like a tavern. Students will be divide in 5 group (the 4 are customers) and the other are waiters and cashiers.

Phase 1

In the first phase, the lesson takes place in the classroom in a traditional way. The teacher gives the first knowledge and information about the addition and the subtraction of decimal numbers, so the Teacher divides students in groups of four and elaborates the drama actions.

Firstly, each group should sits around the desk (which represent the taverns table) and orders from the menu food and drinks. These students represent the customers who enjoy the nice music, the food and the company. They choose from the menu a variety of delicious dishes and give their orders to the waiters.

Secondly the waiters should take the order and  make the account on the blackboard according to the  place order.

Lastly the teacher will watch the whole process and he is the person who encourages the children in this freestyle performance and check the sums of bills.

Phase 2

Teacher’s bell rings and the first group will sit on table with number 1 and make an order. The customers have fun and discuss and the waiter will help them to choose from the menu and introduce them the special dishes. Then the waiter goes on the blackboard and make the bill. For example: salad = 3,80 euros, Spaghetti= 7,50 euros,     Beer = 5 euros, dessert= 3,70euros. He does the addition.

Teacher’s bell rings again and the second group of customers starts to move again towards the table with number 2. The second group decides to choose a different menu, in order the waiters to have the chance to make more practice in additions of decimal numbers.

The same action continues until all groups order their foods.

At this point, the teacher will present how students should be check their bill using calculations.

Phase 3

In the 3rd phase the teacher introduces the new condition. At this point the waiters will give a sum to customers and asks  them to write down the best menu  they have ordered. So, they have to study carefully the menu and  make combinations of the different options. When they are ready they  give their notes to the waiter.

Teacher’s bell rings again and the first group starts the action.

The same action continues until all groups give their own combinations.

At the end of this phase teacher cooperates with the waiters and check the outcomes.

Phase 4

In the end, all stand in a circle and present possible questions, expressing all the difficulties during actions. They all share this experience and the knowledge that they have gained. This phase is also necessary for the teacher to receive feedback and to design similar actions. As a next step the teacher should give students exercises on notebooks in order to make practice.
